In the midst of a great season, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy has gotten hurt. As such, he’s doubtful for Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints following his team’s big win against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 8. Purdy suffered injuries in succession to his throwing shoulder and left shoulder during the second quarter of the game. That begs the question of if he’ll even be here in the coming weeks.
All the injuries happened on this play when Purdy was running for seven yards at the end of the first half. With less than two minutes to go in the first half, he took off to his left. One second later Seahawks safety Julian Love got him just as he was tipping toward the sideline. Even with those injuries, Purdy wasn’t ready to throw in the towel. He bounced back full force to end the game, spearheading a seminal 49ers touchdown drive that ultimately won them the game. In his first game back, he finished with 26-of-35 passing for 277 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.
Purdy’s mood turned himself after the game, as he was suddenly a nonparticipant in practice on Wednesday. San Francisco 49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan meets with the media on Friday, September 22, 2023. He called it “unlikely” Purdy will be cleared in time to face the Saints. He reiterated that the toe injury is the major concern right now.
“I think it’s a long shot,” – Kyle Shanahan
Health has been a major theme as head coach Kyle Shanahan made clear anxiety over Purdy’s injury. Yet, as Carton noted, Purdy exhibited no acute signs of injury on visual inspection. He left the door open that there could be multiple missed games from Purdy during his recovery.
As they prepare for the possibility of being without their starting quarterback, the 49ers are looking to add to their depth. If Purdy indeed cannot play, the SF 49ers will need to look outside the team for another quarterback. This time, they want to provide some depth behind Mac Jones. Aren’t practicing squad Adrian Martinez. At the same time, the team was evaluating new veteran backup quarterback Mike White as well throughout Wednesday’s practice.
Shanahan sounded optimistic but guarded in his optimism about Purdy’s return. He did not shy away from saying, “He’s got a chance to play, and hopefully he will.” For now, like the rest of us, the squad will just wait and prepare for the worst while still hoping for a speedy recovery.
