New York Giants starting linebacker Micah McFadden suffered a foot injury while playing against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday. He is scheduled to have surgery Tuesday to repair the injury. His injury occurred while he was sacking quarterback Jayden Daniels. Unfortunately, that means he’ll be forced to miss a significant amount of time. According to ESPN, a source confirmed that this setback has caused McFadden to now miss “significant time.”
The injury comes at a rough time for McFadden, who has been an essential player in the Giants’ resurgence on defense. Over the past two seasons, he outplayed that extension by starting 14 games each season and turning in a high level of production with gaudy statistics. He tallied more than 100 tackles in each of those two seasons. Come on, last season he produced a career-high in 107 tackles! His exceptional performance throughout 2022 cemented his spot in the permanent 2023 starting lineup.
So when McFadden went down during the game, Darius Muasau had to play a more significant role right after that injury. When exactly McFadden will return to the lineup remains unclear. There are indications that he could be back before the season is over.
McFadden’s rookie contract, as with all players selected in the 2020 NFL Draft, will expire at the end of this season. This further complicates his predicament. The Giants will have to balance his immediate recovery going forward with their longterm plans for the player.
The news of McFadden’s injury was first reported by NFL Network, and it has since raised concerns among fans and analysts regarding the team’s defensive strategy moving forward. The Giants will likely look to Muasau and other players to fill the void left by McFadden’s absence during this critical period in the season.
