Gloucestershire produced an extraordinary display on the opening day of their County Championship clash with Leicestershire. With good reason, because they are now in a very strong position to take advantage of their new-found momentum. Interim skipper James Bracey won the toss and chose to bat first. He tinkered with the lineup, too, making two changes to their lineup from their last Championship match.
Graeme van Buuren proved to be an unsung hero and key player for Gloucestershire. He smashed a superb 101 runs, laying the first blow in what would be a very high-scoring affair. His teammates provided him with tremendous support. Charlesworth finished with 74 runs while Bracey himself scored 69 runs off just 43 balls after being promoted to the top of the order. Miles Hammond was the other key player, scoring 50 runs. It was their collective efforts that allowed Gloucestershire to put a competitive total on the board the first day.
On the bowling front, Leicestershire’s Chris Wright and Josh Hull both bowed beautifully. Wright finished with 3 for 56, while Hull’s performance earned her 3 for 79. Unfortunately for their hard work, Leicestershire could not stem the flow of runs being churned out by Gloucestershire’s batsmen.
Leicestershire struggled with their best lineup. Five of the team’s starters were gone entering this match, largely due to the key players having departed. That leaves only Cameron Bancroft and Todd Murphy returned to Australia. They are accompanied by Peter Handscomb, who withdrew to return home for the Australian domestic season. Leicestershire has rebuilt its squad accordingly to adapt to these developments. The team is currently aiming for promotion to Division One for the first time in its history.
At the time of writing, Leicestershire are perched perilously at the bottom of the Championship table. They need an improbable 20 points from their last three fixtures to stay up in Division One next season. Now that they have two points in the bag, the pressure is really on them to do well in their final matches.
As the game progresses, everyone is focused on Leicestershire. The key issue now is whether they can recover in their second innings and deal with the damage done by Gloucestershire’s impressive opening salvo. This collision may have serious consequences on promotion hopes. It will further set the mood for the team’s culture going forward.
