Ben Calitz, a 23-year-old batter and wicketkeeper, has been picked for his first Ireland T20 squad. This pick is a monumental turning point in his career. He’s currently preparing to feature in a groundbreaking, three-match T20 series against England. The series is set to kick off in Malahide on September 17, with more matches scheduled for September 19 and September 21. It is the first time these two countries will meet in this format on Irish soil.
Born in Canada, Calitz previously played for his native country at the under-19 level before moving to Ireland in 2022. His home performances with lesser clubs have historically and very recently turned heads. While playing for Munster Reds in the Inter-Provincial series, he proved his smarts and his range. Earlier this year, he was rewarded with selection for the Ireland Wolves’ tour to the United Arab Emirates.
Calitz will bring considerable experience to a young and dynamic 14-man squad. Among the team’s stars are Paul Stirling, Ross Adair, Curtis Campher and Gareth Delany. His inclusion is a major personal coup for him. More importantly, it is a testament to the development of Irish cricket, not only having ancillary talents, but developing them, from different backgrounds.
Having never represented Ireland at any level before, Calitz’s call-up reflects his outstanding recent emergence and bright potential. His ability to perform under pressure will get the most focused scrutiny. He’d be joined on the field by more familiar names including George Dockrell and Harry Tector.
The coming T20 series against England has far bigger implications than a simple bilateral match series. It represents the new dawn for Irish cricket that was mentioned. As I write this, both teams are preparing to meet for the first time in this strange new world — on Irish soil. Calitz’s participation is further evidence of the growing competitiveness of the sport in Ireland.
