Giants Linebacker McFadden Carted Off with Injury in Season Opener

New York Giants linebacker Micah McFadden suffered a gruesome leg injury in the first quarter of Sunday’s season opener. This back-breaking injury happened during a game against the Washington Commanders. The injury happened when he was trying to make a stop on Commanders QB Jayden Daniels. After the play, McFadden was carted off the field, with his return for the game immediately ruled out.

McFadden’s injury is particularly worrisome, as he was just turning into the team’s full-time starter in 2023. In each of the past two seasons, he’s averaged 14 starts per season. He was known for his tackle production, with a personal-best total of 107 tackles coming last season. His rookie deal runs out after this season. This throws even more doubt into his future with the team.

In his absence, new recruit Darius Muasau came to take McFadden’s place. The Commanders were uncharacteristically quick to snatch up this gift. They found a weakness in Muasau and attacked, using him to catch tight end Zach Ertz on the very next play for a touchdown, resulting in a 21-6 win against the Giants.

As to where McFadden goes now, after the injury setback, he did return to the sideline in the second half wearing a walking boot. His attention is still on putting forth the best performance he can this season – not on potentially being “screwed” by contract negotiations.

“There hasn’t been anything yet [with the contract], and I’m just focused on what we’re doing right now.” – Micah McFadden

McFadden emphasized his commitment to development, stating, > “I think there’s a lot of things that I can focus on to get better.”

The Giants need to bounce back from that defeat. In addition, they will have to adjust for the hole McFadden’s injury left as they look ahead to next games. The team will closely monitor his recovery while relying on Muasau and other teammates to step up in his absence.
