Giants’ Malik Nabers Set to Play While Andrew Thomas Faces Doubtful Status

As the New York Giants get ready for their Week 1 matchup against the Cowboys, they have received good and bad news on the player front. And of course Malik Nabers is primed for a breakout season. As a result, last season he was the first player in franchise history to record 109 receptions, accumulating 1,204 yards with seven touchdowns. Starting center Andrew Thomas, who is still getting over a Lisfranc injury, is doubtful for Sunday’s matchup.

Nabers’ summer of luck was just getting started. He wasted a good chunk of it on the physically unable to perform list due to a little back tweak. Sheftz recently downplayed the injury, referring to it as “normal camp tightness.” That would be enough to disqualify him from participating in the season opener. After an admirable return to action last season, he has once again established himself as one of the premier talents on the roster.

Nabers missed almost two weeks of practice this summer, but that absence couldn’t hold back his readiness. Well, let’s just say he was completely dialed in for the season opener. Entering Week 7, he had no injury designation, indicating he’s made a successful return to game action. His knack for playmaking will be critical for the Giants, especially now with the status of Thomas in flux.

Andrew Thomas’s rehabilitation has been very well documented. He was activated from the PUP list a few weeks back. On Friday, he participated in live team drills for the first time this season. Even with that progress, he is still holding on to his doubtful tag entering the game. Suffice it to say, Thomas recognized himself that he’s playing through pain and soreness at this point while still in the rehab process.

On Monday, Coach Brian Daboll was positive about Thomas’s health, saying, “He’s going to be fine.” If the Giants lose Thomas, it may have a far bigger effect on how well they’re able to perform. The areas where that team has weathered the severest storms in his absence. They’ve managed to post a pitiful 3-15 mark the last two seasons when he isn’t in the lineup. His playing time as the Giants’ go-to, No. 1 receiver has been critical for their offensive game plan.
