Paul Doyle, a 53-year-old Croxteth, Liverpool has pleaded not guilty. He is charged with 31 offences relating to public disorder against the man seriously injured during Liverpool’s Premier League victory parade. On May 26, just after 6 p.m., this is what happened. Doyle’s police offensive drove into crowds of fans celebrating the team’s success.
These charges against Doyle go beyond the pale, involving aggravated dangerous driving and aggravated affray. Attempt to cause grievous bodily harm—the 18 counts he is facing. Plus, he is charged with nine counts of causing Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH) with intent and two counts of wounding with intent. Initially, they were charged with seven misdemeanors. Last month, the indictment ballooned to 99 counts during a hearing.
The violent outbreak resulted in more than 134 injuries to attendees. Our victims included the most vulnerable members of our society, from six months to 77 years of age. This sobering statistic highlights just how serious the situation is and the toll it continues to take on the Charleston community.
Doyle’s not guilty pleas were entered formally at an arraignment for the case that was as much notable for the sheer size of the list of charges. His case has generated tremendous interest. These allegations are troubling and the injuries sustained by parade attendees are severe.
