Arsenal’s Attack Under Fire After Defeat at Anfield

Arsenal’s Attack Under Fire After Defeat at Anfield

Arsenal’s recent performance drew sharp criticism from pundits Jamie Carragher, Roy Keane, and Theo Walcott following a disappointing 1-0 defeat against Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, August 31, 2025. The match, which kicked off at 20:00 UK time, highlighted the Gunners’ ongoing struggle to generate effective attacking plays.

For two hours of post-match analysis, Carragher, Keane, and Walcott expertly dissected Arsenal’s attacking problems. They condemned the squad for failing to produce measurable chances to score from the outset of the game. Despite showing periods of possession, Arsenal failed to convert that control into meaningful chances, leaving them vulnerable to Liverpool’s counterattacks.

As the pundits so aptly described, Arsenal’s play looked robotic, without the unpredictability or urgency that should underpin a proper attacking approach. Carragher pointed out a number of times when the Gunners’ attacking players were clearly separated from their midfielders. This disconnect led to a very one-dimensional and predictable offensive performance. Keane went on to say that the team’s predictability made it very easy for the likes of Liverpool to defend against them.

Walcott added the sentiment that despite looking threatening at times, Arsenal just didn’t do enough when it counted. He stressed the need to make deeper, more purposeful off-the-ball movements. He pushed players to be more inventive and risk-taking in the attacking third. The trio all identified that these concerns have been problematic in Arsenal’s last few performances. This has raised some very valid questions about their tactical approach altogether.

The loss at Anfield is another blow to Arsenal’s quest to compete for the top prizes this campaign. And with their first match of World Cup qualifying just days away, the team is under immense pressure to quickly re-adjust their attacking approach. Both supporters and experts are excitedly anticipating how Arsenal will address these issues. They still come out wanting to see the team be more cohesive in the first couple of matches.
