Doug Bracewell Returns to Essex for Final Championship Push

Essex County Cricket Club have today announced the signing of New Zealand all-rounder Doug Bracewell for the rest of the season. The 34-year-old New Zealander was most recently with Essex in 2023. It will now be his job to strengthen the team’s squad further as they prepare for the final three County Championship matches next month.

On the merits, Bracewell has an almost-unimpeachable international record. He is a veteran of 28 Test matches, 21 One-Day Internationals, and 20 T20 internationals for New Zealand. Though curiously, he has not played for his national team since March of this year. And for one so inexperienced, his full first-class record is extraordinary – 416 wickets and 4,483 runs, including three first-class centuries.

In 2023, Bracewell put one hell of an exclamation point on his time at Essex, picking up 24 wickets in only eight Championship outings. His familiarity with the club and its environment makes him a valuable asset as the team faces crucial fixtures ahead.

Chris Silverwood, the head coach of Essex, said that he had “full confidence” in Bracewell’s return. He spoke of Bracewell’s invaluable experience and his past affinity with the club.

“He has a wealth of experience and has represented the club before so he knows what it means to play for Essex,” – Chris Silverwood

Bracewell’s family has a rich cricketing heritage. He is the son of Brendon Bracewell, a former international cricketer for New Zealand. His uncle, John Bracewell, played at the international level and gained much respect for his work as a coach. Furthermore, his first cousin once removed, Michael Bracewell, has played international cricket for New Zealand.

“With three important County Championship fixtures left he reinforces our bowling attack who have had a heavy workload this season and I am confident he will contribute to the team.”

Bracewell looks forward to rejoining Essex. He’s focused on helping the squad win matches in the near future.

Essex have moved to sign Bracewell permanently until the end of the season. It’s a sign of their intent to improve their roster further as the January transfer window approaches. With his proven track record and family legacy in cricket, Bracewell aims to make a notable impact as Essex seeks to secure victories in the final stages of the Championship.

“My time playing for Essex in 2023 is something I remember fondly and I hope I can help the team win matches during the run in,” – Doug Bracewell

Essex’s decision to sign Bracewell until the end of the season signifies their commitment to strengthening their squad during a critical period. With his proven track record and family legacy in cricket, Bracewell aims to make a notable impact as Essex seeks to secure victories in the final stages of the Championship.
