Tommy Fleetwood came out on top at the Tour Championship, winning his first PGA Tour victory — and the prized FedEx Cup. The 27-year-old Englishman capped a historic performance with a final round 2-under 68, finishing the tournament at a career-best 18 under par. He definitely won the final contest at East Lake Golf Club. He won by three strokes over Russell Henley and Patrick Cantlay.
Though her route to victory was tricky, it was not all that straightforward. He’s had a horrific run of near misses in recent months. Two near misses have increased his appetite for victory. Including last week’s Travelers Championship, where he played the last hole with a one-shot lead. He ended up losing to Keegan Bradley in a playoff by one stroke. By his own admission, that disappointment festered during the FedEx St. Jude Championship. Most inexplicably, after building up a two-shot lead with only three holes remaining, he failed to close it out.
Prestigious title aside, Fleetwood took home $10 million for his victory. This victory was a major upset and one of the biggest of his career. In the process, he became the first golfer to break $33.4 million without winning a single event on tour.
If Fleetwood’s victory was well-deserved, so was the no-show of several other big players who completely faltered in the final round. The American’s chances evaporated when he dropped a shot on the par-4 16th hole. That error almost cost him a comeback before it had started. Scottie Scheffler was looking to become the first golfer to win the FedEx Cup in consecutive years. From the beginning of the tournament he was put on the hot seat.
Corey Conners and Cameron Young each provided top-tier performances. They both carded rounds of 62 to finish T4 individually and T4 as a team, respectively.
“I battled all week to give myself a chance.” – Scottie Scheffler
Fleetwood’s Tour Championship win was a moment of brilliance and fortitude in a year punctuated with uncertainty. Most importantly, it created a buzz for the future Ryder Cup. U.S. Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley is preparing to name his six captain’s picks. The tournament as currently mandated is scheduled for next month on the newly devastated Bethpage Black.
As Bradley makes this momentous decision, read his reflections on the gravity of his duty and his dedication to his troops.
“Nobody wants to win the Ryder Cup more than Keegan Bradley.” – Maverick McNealy
McNealy affirmed his confidence in Bradley’s decision-making abilities, emphasizing that success would ultimately depend on which players deliver their best performances on the course.
