Rúben Amorim Sets Ambitious Goals for Manchester United’s Future

Rúben Amorim as the newly minted manager of Manchester United. He hopes to achieve Premier League titles with the club in the next three seasons! In a recent interview, he emphasized the importance of fostering a positive environment amidst external pressures and criticism surrounding the team. Amorim aims to shield his players from distractions while focusing on building a cohesive unit that can perform at the highest level.

Yet Amorim understood the position that Manchester United put themselves in last campaign. He feels that their collective wrestling with those obstacles has tempered their cloth of teamwork. He focused on how the pain they experienced in tandem would be the bedrock for what they would accomplish together. Under his leadership, he would like to turn those historical obstacles into launching pads for the club’s big dreams.

Building a Winning Culture

Yet Amorim soon clarified that his vision transcends short-term outcomes. “Success is to win titles, and we don’t know if we are going to achieve that this season,” he stated. And he emphasized the need to focus on incremental progress and what’s possible today. He stressed the importance of treating every game like a final.

“We are not in the moment that we can say we are clearly fighting for the league,” he noted. Instead, he aims for his team to prepare diligently for every game while striving to dominate and entertain their fans. “We want to be really competitive, trying to dominate games, trying to score goals and not get our fans bored to see our games,” he added.

Amorim’s green shoots philosophy is in line with a long term commitment to develop and maintain a competitive squad. He pointed out that the club’s long-term objective is to secure the Premier League title within three years, stating, “I think everyone knows that we have a goal – not for this season but in three years to win the Premier League title.”

Navigating External Pressures

Noise can affect player performance. Amorim understands that sound affects player performance, especially in intense pressures cooker settings such as Manchester United. He has taken proactive measures to protect his players from criticism and distractions by advising them to stay focused on their roles within the team.

I have to do what’s right for me and my players,” he said emphatically. The only way to do that is to warn them not to view anything. His comments highlight a philosophy centered on mental resilience: “You have to be like a monk, especially when you have problems and then I try to present the facts because sometimes there is a narrative that is not true.

Further addressing the pressures faced by the team, Amorim remarked, “The first thing I’ve already said to my players is when you see so many critics, you get upset and that is normal.” By emphasizing a sense of team over everything else, he seeks to maintain a winning culture that prepares players to succeed in the face of outside noise and expectations.

Focus on Key Players

Beyond developing better talents from outside the club, Amorim’s vision for Manchester United would involve finding greater potential within the squad. He expressed excitement about working with Benjamin Sesko, a promising 22-year-old striker signed by the club during its recent spending spree of around £200 million. Amorim doesn’t just see potential in Sesko, he sees the world’s biggest potential. He further declared his commitment to make Sesko a franchise player for Manchester United within the next few seasons.

I want Benjamin Sesko to relax, take a deep breath, and just enjoy Manchester United,” he said. Amorim’s belief in Sesko is a continuation of a larger trend more clubs should follow— investing in young up and comers, while setting yourself up for the future. He stated, “When you are in a club like this, you want to have the best players but you have to imagine the future.”

Beyond the manager’s commitment to developing young players comes a commitment to establishing a fierce and effective defensive line. After their opening game of the season against Arsenal, Altay Bayindir faced critics for a howler he dropped. In response, Amorim moved quickly to strong-arm defenders of his goalkeeper’s poor performance in 2022. “Altay made one mistake, but last year he had very good performances,” he said. He recognized the importance of countering toxic narratives about specific players as part of creating a healthy culture.
