Uncertainty Surrounds Backup QB Taylor’s Availability for Season Opener

The New York Jets are navigating a concerning situation regarding their backup quarterback, Taylor, as the team prepares for the season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers on September 7. At 36 years old Taylor, when healthy, has been the primary backup to starting quarterback Justin Fields. His availability has been uncertain after a hospitalization last month.

Taylor hasn’t been able to practice since late July, following her surgery on August 12. Despite the injury, Detroit head coach Aaron Glenn is still hopeful about Taylor’s recovery. With full assurance, he told the ACC media, “I know he’ll be ready for Week 1.” This sentiment reflects the team’s hope to have Taylor ready to serve as the No. 2 quarterback for the opener.

Rich, a veteran sports writer with more than 30 years of experience—mostly with the New York Daily News—covering the Jets, came to ESPN in 2010. Most importantly, he stressed the importance of Taylor’s role on the team. The Jets’ quarterback depth has been tested during Taylor’s absence, leading to increased scrutiny on both Adrian Martinez and rookie free agent Tim Cook.

Martinez has taken his place in practice and struggled, throwing a pair of interceptions during recent workouts. He was extraordinarily efficient and effective. He finished 30 of 51 passes with 351 total passing yards. While this performance cemented his potential, it brought consistency concerns to the forefront. Still getting the hang of the professional game, Cook finished 25 of 38 for 235 yards. He tossed one interception.

As the team prepares for its season opener, Coach Glenn won’t say when Taylor will be back in practice. He doesn’t want to lose anyone’s attention as they prepare for the next week’s match. This creates a scenario where a cloud of uncertainty still looms over the Jets’ quarterback situation.

“It’s wait and see for me and a lot of guys on the fence.” – Adrian Martinez

The Jets’ next game against the Steelers might be most important as they head into their own quarterback decision. With Taylor’s experience and leadership, his presence on the field would undoubtedly bolster the team’s chances for success.
