The Dallas Cowboys look forward to playing in the 2025 NFL regular season. Now, questions regarding the health of players involved and roster decisions made are coming into play. The team is scheduled to open its 2023 season on September 4th against the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field. NFL reporter Todd Archer from ESPN closely follows the Cowboys’ developments, providing insights into the roster dynamics as the deadline for cuts approaches.
The Cowboys’ draft is riding on Mazi Smith. Now he finds himself in a vulnerable position, battling to save his place on the roster. Even with all the ambiguity, the group is optimistic. Or perhaps they’re just prepared to provide Smith one last opportunity to fulfill his first-round draft pedigree. How he performs these next few days will be very important as the team continues to assess its options.
In stark comparison, Trevon Diggs starts the clock ticking with mere days remaining ahead of the season opener. He’s now on the physically unable to perform list with a knee injury. That last item could keep him out for the first game or two of the season, at least. This absence would be a huge blow to the Cowboys’ defensive game plan. We’ll get our first look at the team’s impressive depth in the secondary during these early games. They will need to continue proving themselves without one of their best players.
The Cowboys were impressed with Thomas’s performance during the summer. They think that he might be able to contribute immediately, helping to make up for any fallen comrades. At the same time, Jaydon Blue’s long-term future has been a source of speculation. Even though he missed two preseason games due to an ankle injury, Blue has been impressive in practice. His performance has many excited for what they hope will be his contributions this coming season.
Compounding the injury concerns, Brevyn Spann-Ford has missed all of the preseason games with a high ankle sprain. His absence alone would bring concern to the tight end position. On the injury front, Jonathan Mingo will miss at least the first four games while recovering from a knee sprain. The Cowboys’ coaching staff will definitely have their eyes focused on these injuries as they ramp up and get ready for the start of the season.
The clock is ticking to cut the roster down to 53 players. Please be sure to have your choices submitted by 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday! Among those expected to secure a spot is C.J. Goodwin, who will be on the season-opening roster against the Eagles. If Goodwin doesn’t crack the roster, James Houston might be able to take his place. He’s certainly doing all he can to earn that last roster spot.
With Dak Prescott under center, the Cowboys will include the veteran quarterback’s leadership and experience. Javonte Williams should anchor the backfield for the offense. He’s clearly looking to lean into this role as he leads the charge against the rest of the league in a new season. Defensively, Kenneth Murray Jr. will be an important inside linebacker, as he aims to bolster the Cowboys’ efforts to fend off opposing offenses.
