England Captain Leah Williamson to Miss Start of WSL Season Due to Knee Injury

Leah Williamson, the captain of the England women’s national football team, will not take part in the opening matches of the upcoming Women’s Super League (WSL) season due to a knee injury. The injury came just about a month after she had the same procedure done on her right knee. That same procedure happened last week. According to The Advocate, Williamson is now expected to miss at least the next three weeks.

Williamson returned to Arsenal with significant swelling in her right knee following the procedure. This news unfortunately made her withdraw from Arsenal’s pre-season trip to Germany. She was excited about the chance to get ready for the upcoming season down there. The operation, needed to flush her knee joint out, was a success.

On the day of Arsenal’s WSL media day, Williamson appeared for the first time in public on crutches, her knee surgically encased in a brace. Her visible marker of injury serves to illustrate her struggles as she enters the world of rehabilitative care.

On the field, Williamson has emerged as one of the truly influential players on the North American women’s football scene. She has led England to two major tournament victories, including consecutive European Championship triumphs. Her leadership was instrumental in the team’s success, particularly highlighted by Chloe Kelly’s decisive penalty shoot-out goal against Spain on July 27.

With the new season just days away, Arsenal has a tumultuous schedule right in front of them. They’re scheduled to play the London City Lionesses on September 6, West Ham on September 12 (that match live on Sky Sports), as well as meetings with Manchester United, Aston Villa, and Manchester City later in September and October. To throw more into the mix, they will start their Champions League campaign in early October.
