More recently, in May 2024, a shocking emergency situation occurred at the Kansas City Chiefs practice facility. Several rounds then flew through the building, hitting it as head coach Andy Reid sat inside his office. This disturbing incident, caught on video, has recently triggered an ongoing investigation by the Kansas City police department. They’re pursuing it as an aggravated assault because the building was occupied at the time of the shooting.
By the end of this attack, two bullets struck the building. One bullet perforated the third floor of the building and another entered an external residential air-conditioning unit. Of course, the Chiefs organization moved immediately, with only a handful of members knowing what had happened at the time. Despite the gravity of the matter, Kansas City police reported, “Based on investigation to this point there is no indication this was a targeted incident at any person or organization.”
Under Andy Reid’s influence, the Chiefs have been to seven straight AFC title games. He was unhurt in the incident and ranks fourth on the NFL’s career wins list. He is a brilliant 273-146 overall. This accomplishment comes after 12 seasons with the Chiefs and 14 seasons with the Eagles. It was just months after he had led the team to a Super Bowl championship repeat. This victory constituted their third consecutive title in five years.
As Chiefs president Mark Donovan said back on that awful day, the organization has been committed to cooperating with officials and preventing any such incident from ever occurring again. He stated, “Our focus is keeping our staff, our fans and everybody involved with our organization safe.”
Donovan also provided valuable lessons about how to effectively communicate in the aftermath of such an event. He noted, “Then we went back and said, ‘OK, here’s where we are. Here’s the situation. Here’s what we’ve determined happened. What’s the next step, both from a PR standpoint, from a communication standpoint?”
The federal investigation is still open, and local law enforcement is still actively seeking information about the shooting. As the Chiefs navigate this unsettling situation, Donovan affirmed their commitment to safety: “I think in any situation, we have to be fully prepared, no matter where we go. We will be fully prepared, no matter where we go.”
