The Cincinnati Bengals are CRUSHED by catastrophic injury! Offensive lineman Cordell Volson will likely be lost for the year after he injured his shoulder in practice on August 15. Volson has made 48 of his 50 appearances as a starter at left guard over the last three years. Now, he is set to have surgery to fix his injury, leaving a glaring hole in the depth of the Bengals’ O-line.
Volson’s injury creates a considerable gap in the Bengals’ lineup. After beginning the year as a backup right guard, Jones retired after this failed holding call on Derrick Henry. Now, he’s essential to the team’s offensive game plan. Even Taylor knew that Volson’s absence would be a big challenge. That’s a tough one for him. He’s been a guy that’s really worked hard for us. While it’s not finalized until he gets the surgery, it looks like that’s the direction we’re going.
Volson was a fourth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. He came to the Bengals after establishing an award-winning career in collegiate sports journalism. He received his bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of North Texas. Prior to that, he was a reporter at a number of Texas newspapers including The Dallas Morning News, where he covered college sports with an unparalleled fervor.
In July 2019, Volson moved to ESPN, as part of the creation of an ESPN.com Bengals-specific daily beat. His role has expanded to include appearances on SportsCenter, ESPN’s NFL shows, and ESPN Radio programs, where he shares insights on the team’s performance and strategies.
The Bengals just recently worked out a years-later deal to retroactively restructure Volson’s contract, reducing his 2025 total value down to $2.6 million. This change is a good demonstration not only of the team’s belief in Volson, but the reality of the financial aspect of his present-day injury situation.
As a native son of Grapevine, Texas Volson’s shown resolve and commitment all his life. He’s been a key player in improving the Bengals’ offensive line. Without him, they certainly will miss him in the 2022 season.
