Cam Ward‘s spirited trash-talking has ignited a much-needed energy in the Tennessee Titans’ offense. His competitive spirit is what led to a fight with defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons in practice on Monday. This was an unusual incident that caused concern among coaches and fans alike. Ward’s touchdown pass highlight to Calvin Ridley sparked an underdog run and dancing dog marvel. However, this excitement soon turned into a violent altercation.
Ward started the battle by punching Simmons immediately after finishing his pass. Then he danced with his signature “Zombieland” celebration directly in Simmons’ grill. This gesture was understandably infuriating to Simmons, who reacted by delivering a two-hand shove directly to Ward’s face mask in response. That became a relatively minor scuffle that provoked an overwhelmingly major response. Showing the tight bond between the players, members of the offensive line rushed to protect their quarterback.
Ward and Simmons have a longstanding competitive history evident by some post-play banter. In spite of the contentiousness of their exchanges, Ward spoke admiringly of Simmons, calling him “strong as shit.”
