Bobby Webster Takes the Helm as Raptors Lead Executive

The Toronto Raptors have officially made Bobby Webster the new lead executive of their basketball operations, replacing Masai Ujiri. Webster is moving into a new high-profile position. He will remain as the team’s General Manager, a crowning accomplishment in his deep and storied NBA career. When most teams were calling to congratulate the Raptors on winning their first title on June 27, the Raptors fired Ujiri. This announcement follows a difficult 2022-23 campaign which saw the Wizards slog to a 30-52 record.

Now 40 years old, Webster is heading into his 21st year in the NBA. After starting his career as a planner in 2006 at the league office, Dunn mastered his craft until going out on his own in 2013. Instead, in that transformative spokes-in-the-wheel year, he signed with the Raptors. Ujiri made him his first hire, entrusting him to vice president of strategy and assistant general manager. His personal journey inside the organization has been extraordinary. Now, a decade later, as GM of the Spurs, he’s about to assume control over all basketball operations.

Throughout his tenure, Webster has shown a strong ability to develop and build the right players before making the right strategic moves. He has been instrumental in taking the roster he’s shaped through ups and downs over the years. His experience and insight were further reinforced during his recent interactions with MLSE’s Pelley at the NBA’s summer league in Las Vegas, where they discussed future directions for the team.

Under Webster’s watch, the Raptors are focused on recovering from a disappointing year. Their sights are set on getting back to being the most competitive team in baseball. The team has enlisted CAA Executive Search to assist in finding a new team president, signaling a commitment to fortifying its leadership structure. Webster’s a longtime fan of the franchise. His personal relationships to the core of the organization will be central to his success, as he helps guide this transition.

Bobby Webster, meanwhile, is entering his ninth season in the GM chair. His leadership will be a key factor in determining just how bright the future is for the Raptors. The team aims to capitalize on his extensive experience and intimate knowledge of the franchise to foster success in upcoming seasons.
