For the Atlanta Falcons, wide receiver Darnell Mooney couldn’t come soon enough. He’s been out of action since the first day of training camp on July 24. Mooney, 27, sustained a shoulder injury while diving for a pass and hasn’t practiced since. While his absence has put the team on watch and increased concern from fans and team officials, there is hope surrounding his return.
Interim head coach Raheem Morris called Mooney “week-to-week.” This provides us with a more meaningful ray of hope that he’d actually be back sooner than later. Despite the injury, Morris emphasized that he does not have any significant concerns regarding Mooney’s ability to return to form.
“There’s always concerns with missing reps, but there’s not a concern with Mooney,” – Raheem Morris.
Last year, Mooney proved he could be a legitimate threat between the lines. He finished with 64 receptions for 992 yards and a career-high five touchdown receptions. His excellent performance quickly turned him into a focal point for the Falcons. Now, the team is excited to have him back as an integral part of their offensive gameplan.
Since Mooney went down, other guys have stepped up with the opportunities provided by playing time. Rookie Casey Washington earned consideration with a strong camp to start alongside Drake London and McCloud. Washington has been putting on a show in camp. Ask anyone what the best two catches of the season have been thus far and they’ll probably point at both of Smith’s.
The Falcons’ offense has changed while Mooney’s been on the mend. Since taking over as the team’s quarterback, Michael Penix Jr. has developed a strong rapport with London. As they prepare to take on their next opponent this season, London has proven to be Penix’s top target.
“Obviously, Mooney, we will have him back coming up in the season,” – Michael Penix Jr.
While there is some uncertainty about when he might return, both Morris and Penix Jr. expressed confidence in Mooney’s recovery trajectory.
“I feel like he should be back Week 1,” – Michael Penix Jr.
Morris expressed his confidence in Mooney’s dedication to the game and the support of the Falcons’ performance team. At the same time, he feels confident, given Mooney’s work ethic and commitment, that he will get back to full strength in no time.
“The preparation, the diligence, the person that he is and what he puts into it… I know I’ll be able to get him back in a [quick] fashion just because of who he is and who our performance team is,” – Raheem Morris.
As training camp rolls on, the Falcons are concentrated on making sure Mooney is prepared for the regular season.
“That lets me sleep well at night,” – Raheem Morris.
