Welsh Fire celebrated a significant victory on Tuesday, marking their first win of the 2025 season by defeating Manchester Originals by 25 runs. The match, held at Sophia Gardens, showcased a strong performance from the Welsh side, with notable contributions from several players.
Jos Buttler was at the forefront of Welsh Fire’s assault, hammering a remarkable 57 runs from only 34 deliveries. His innings, which featured two sixes and six fours, gave the team great momentum in setting a strong total. Buttler’s performance was poignant and emotional, according to Ffion Wynne, reflecting how much this win meant to the team.
Welsh Fire provided a difficult target of 137 runs for Manchester Originals to chase down. They batted all their allocated 100 balls, finally closing at 137-8. Mitchell Santner enjoyed himself too, plundering Michael Bracewell’s left-arm spin for one six and one four. He was bowled by Jofra Archer with only eight balls remaining in the final. Lewis Gregory added 21 runs to the team’s score, while Chris Green threatened a powerful finish with two sixes in his quickfire 19 runs off nine balls. Green was trapped on the crease by Josh Tongue with five balls remaining.
Manchester Originals just couldn’t get a groove going. They were bowled out for a mere 112 runs in 97 balls. Riley Meredith was the pick of Welsh Fire bowlers with 4 wickets for 9 runs. Scott Currie further proved a thorn in Fulton’s side with the ball, taking 3 wickets for 22 runs, a notable performance. Chris Green and Josh Tongue joined the squad to strengthen the bowling resources. Every bowler contributed, but Tongue was a deserving star, taking 3-25.
Even with a heroic innings from the Originals, led by Buttler’s fireworks, they couldn’t reach the target. It was a disheartening opening match of the season for Manchester Originals as they went down to the heavy 9 wicket defeat.
“I thought I messed it up when I left the ball before, but it’s a good feeling to get over the line.” – Clark
This hard-fought victory should add to Welsh Fire’s confidence as they continue. Beyond the immediate impact, it establishes a hopeful tone for the entire long season ahead. The home team will be hoping to build on this momentum in their upcoming matches.
