Alice Capsey delivered an outstanding performance, scoring 52 runs from just 29 balls, leading the Oval Invincibles to a commanding victory over the Phoenix in The Hundred. This impressive innings marked Capsey’s fifth fifty in the tournament, further solidifying her status as one of the competition’s rising stars. The 21-year-old all-rounder, a product of The Hundred, has demonstrated remarkable growth since making her professional debut at the age of 16.
The final played out at the storied ground. This is where Capsey first burst onto the scene by scoring a match-winning fifty in her second game back in 2021. Her recent performance played a pivotal role in the Invincibles’ total of 174 for 5, which represents the highest score achieved by the women’s team in The Hundred and the third-highest total recorded by any team in the tournament’s history.
Capsey was supported early by a great platform, laid by her teammates Lauren Winfield-Hill and Meg Lanning. Each of their contributions made her aggressive play possible. She paced a scintillating partnership of 57 off 29 balls with Paige Scholfield. Sterre Kalis allowed a long-range UL batter’s powerful shot to slip through her fingers, leaving the Indians with just 21 runs to chase. Capsey capitalised on this and promptly accelerated the scoring rate.
Although Capsey struggled for form in the past year and was excluded from England’s one-day international series against India, her recent performance showcased a return to confidence. Reflecting on her innings, she noted, “From the get-go I felt all of my options were on.”
Capsey enjoyed a vital success against Phoenix, winning by 22 runs. It was only as she started to return to form that a sense of relief would wash over her. “For me it is such a go-to shot and something I lost a bit of confidence in for a while,” she shared. “To have that confidence to stick at it, it was nice a few came off today.”
