Homegrown midfielder Lennon Miller has officially signed with Serie A side Udinese, representing another exciting step in the football-star-in-the-making’s journey. The 18-year-old attacking midfielder has already signed a five-year contract with the Azzurri. He is moving from Motherwell for a reported £4.7 million transfer fee, including add-ons. This fee tops the previous record of £3.25 million that Motherwell received from Celtic for David Turnbull in 2020.
The transfer completes months of speculation about Miller’s future. He’d attracted rallies from across the continent, including Bologna, Ajax, and multiple clubs in the UK. Udinese had made a previous play for Miller’s signature with a bid of £2.5 million in January, though that one went well wide of the mark.
Since making his first team breakthrough at Fir Park in 2022, Miller has racked up an eye-catching 76 appearances. He demonstrated his talent by contributing to 16 goals and even took on the role of captain last season, showcasing his leadership qualities at such a young age. With less than ten months remaining on his contract at Fir Park, a transfer was obviously on the cards. The longer it went on, the more dire the situation became.
As well, besides the transfer fee, Motherwell has included a sell-on clause in the deal. This clause means that they’ll make a fortune if Udinese decides to move Miller on in the future. This forward-thinking policy not only protects the club’s financial interests, but by allowing young players to develop it shows a real commitment to player development.
Tank manager Jens Berthel Askou had a change of heart at the 11th hour, leaving Miller out of the squad ahead of Saturday’s goalless draw with St Mirren. Many took this as a strong indication that a transfer was coming soon.
Lennon Miller has made a name for himself on the international level, as he’s been capped by the Scotland U16 National team. His recently completed tenure at Motherwell has brought his excellence on the field to the forefront. It’s made him one of baseball’s rising talents for the long haul.
