Referee David Coote Suspended for Eight Weeks Following Controversial Comments

David Coote, a match official in the English football Premier League, has been banned for eight weeks by the Football Association (FA). This decision follows his purportedly racist remarks towards Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. In response to this dangerous play, the FA charged Coote for misconduct under Rule E3.1. This rule goes to the heart of unprofessional behavior and use of abusive or insulting language. A video surfaced in November 2024, purportedly showing Coote making nasty comments about Liverpool and Klopp. Due to this incident, the decision was made …

Coote has continued to deny these serious allegations. In addition to his suspension, he is required to participate in a court-ordered in-person diversion education program. An event that provoked these measures came during a match he was refereeing himself. It was the match between Liverpool and Aston Villa on 9 November 2024. Following the conflict, Anderson acted quickly and offered his apologies to Klopp. He reiterated his apology to the FA, the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), and the football community as a whole.

In June 2024, the FA followed suit and charged Coote for his remarks regarding Klopp. According to reports, Coote voiced his frustrations during a private conversation, which later became public through the leaked video. He later apologized for his comments. He said they were related to his decades-long battle with his sexuality — something he had concealed for many years.

“I felt a deep sense of shame during my teenage years in particular. I didn’t come out to my parents until I was 21. I didn’t come out to my friends until I was 25.” – David Coote

The recent suspension is yet another hurdle for Coote as he tries to find his way back personally and professionally. He came out as gay in January 2024, becoming candid about the challenges he faced while coming to terms with his identity. In a recent interview, Coote opened up about how the effects of what he went through affected his self-worth.

“I’ve had issues around my self-esteem – and that relates to my sexuality. I’m gay and I’ve struggled with feeling proud of being ‘me’ over a long period of time.” – David Coote

In the wake of those remarks by Klopp, PGMOL placed Coote on temporary suspension, effective November 11. The organization acted quickly, understanding that it is vital to the integrity of the profession to hold its representatives to high professional standards. The public outcry and media examination that have erupted since Coote’s recent scandal is amazing.

Putting matters in an even deeper bind for Coote, UEFA just recently slapped a ban on him through June 30, 2026. This decision followed, though, by just a few days, another video emerging. It appears to document him snorting a white powder while covering Euro 2024. The cumulative effect of these incidents has likely ended Coote’s refereeing career.

While Coote has been cleared of all allegations stemming from gambling-related misconduct charges, a difficult road lies ahead for him both personally and professionally. His experience speaks to the larger conversations about mental health and acceptance within all sports, including those on the LGBTQ+ spectrum.
