St Mirren v Motherwell at the SMiSA Stadium, a William Hill Premiership encounter on August 9, 2025. The match ended on a high note frustrating 0-0 tie. As of now, St Mirren is still searching for their first goal of the campaign. Both teams had their share of chances to find the breakthrough, most notably a quartet of missed calling cards in the first half alone.
The match started with an early chance for St Mirren, as Mark O’Hara attempted a half-volley within the opening minute, only to slice it wide of the goal. Motherwell’s Elijah Just and St Mirren’s Killian Phillips were both prominent figures during the game, contributing to the action on the pitch. Try as they might, no one was putting one past the keeper on either side.
Motherwell definitely took control of the game in the first and had the majority of chances to score. One of the most memorable was Said’s first start for Motherwell. He came close to scoring, but St Mirren’s shotstopper, Shamal George, pulled off a brilliant save to keep him out. In a second try, Mikael Mandron picked up a pass from a sub only to have his effort stopped by the ’keeper. O’Hara was set to pounce on the rebound but failed to finish.
St Mirren stunned the odds by making two changes from their previous game with Celtic. On this occasion both Fraser Taylor and Richard King found themselves riding the pine. Later in the match, Tawanda Maswanhise produced a stunning run and effort from the left. The ball did curl in fantastic fashion, but only clipped the far post, leaving the scoreline locked at 0-0.
Desperate to get back on the front foot, St Mirren were forced into two substitutions at the break. Evan Mooney and Tunmise Sobowale for Roland Idowu and Jayden Richardson were subs made to bring new energy and intensity to the front line. Phillips went close with another low driven effort which was turned away with ease by Motherwell stopper, Liam Kelly.
During the second half St Mirren upped the pressure in their efforts to score. Baccus manufactured a look for himself, playing a ball into Mooney for a shot. However, Mooney’s effort went off target, further illustrating the home side’s struggle to convert opportunities into goals.
