The first week of the NFL preseason In anticipation and excitement, teams started to open up their stockings full of surprises on teams. In one of the week’s biggest matchups, the Baltimore Ravens and the Seattle Seahawks stole the spotlight with some MVP-worthy performances. Tyler Loop, making his debut as the only kicker on the Ravens’ roster, had a mixed bag. In the meantime, LaJohntay Wester gave followers of punt return some spectacular moments. On the other hand, Jalen Milroe proved why he’s Seattle’s third QB and has Russ and Geno fans salivating over what’s to come.
The preseason is an important time for every team. They assess their players and determine their rosters before the start of their regular season. Coaches want to find out what players’ strengths and weaknesses are, especially as it pertains to positional battles. Both the Ravens and Seahawks showcased promising talent, making the opening week an engaging spectacle for fans and analysts alike.
Ravens’ Special Teams Stand Out
Ty Loops was the only kicker for the Baltimore Ravens, and that became a story even before the game began. Loop’s first release had many ups and downs. His last attempt, a 46-yarder, but he hooked it wide left, raising fears over his reliability in high-pressure situations. Loop recovered later in the game by drilling a 52-yarder in the fourth quarter to help bring his team within three points.
Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh confirmed how important the preseason was for Loop. Kirby said that Loop needs to show himself deserving to earn a contract long-term, and so thus the evaluation period. The Ravens’ special teams unit is under scrutiny, and Loop’s ability to perform consistently will be crucial for the team’s success. Accumulating experience in these contests is critical for his maturation and fortitude moving forward.
As LaJohntay Wester stepped onto the field, the energy levels jumped. Most notably, he electrified the crowd with an 87-yard punt return for a touchdown in the first quarter. This play not only showcased Wester’s speed but provided much-needed energy to the Ravens’ punt return game. Along with his electric playmaker ability, Strong can be a key contributor on special teams this year.
Colts and Defensive Highlights
The Indianapolis Colts were impressive, with an all-world performance from kicker Spencer Shrader standing out above the rest. On top of that, Shrader had a heavy workload with four field-goal attempts in the first half alone. He did well to convert from 53, 33, and 39 yards, failing on just one tough 52-yarder. His performance was quite promising but revealed some holes in his game. He’s not letting go of his spot on the Colts’ kicking carousel without a fight.
Now over on the defensive side, Shemar Stewart experienced similar hold-ups to getting on the field thanks to contract problems. Once he stepped on the field, Stewart showed his playmaking ability as he rang up zero 18 defensive snaps against the Eagles. He showcased disruptive, game-wrecking tendencies that would do wonders for the Colts’ defensive front. His ability to create pressure will be vital as the team looks to strengthen its defense ahead of the season.
Jihaad Campbell came oh-so-close to intercepting a pass during the game, a player just oozing ball skills, awareness and instincts on defense. Ty Robinson had a productive outing with two pressures and a sack, indicating his potential to be a disruptive force on the defensive line.
Seahawks’ Rising Stars
The Seattle Seahawks showcased some hopeful talent, with Jalen Milroe showing off his upside to be the third QB. Milroe’s performance illustrated his capability to contribute to the Seahawks’ offense this season. He had a rare combination of vision, power and elusiveness. This kind of skill would be enough to earn him an expanded role as the season progresses.
AJ Dillon looked great in his first real action. He carried the ball five times for 27 yards, while catching three passes for an extra 27 yards. His versatility as both a runner and receiver could make him a very useful rotational piece for Seattle’s offense. Dillon’s impressive play should show they have the tools to make him a centerpiece of their offensive game plan.
