The Pittsburgh Steelers are deep into training camp as they prepare for the upcoming preseason, showcasing emerging talents while managing some notable absences. Signature players such as T.J. Watt, Nick Herbig, Alex Highsmith, and Joey Porter Jr. will not be getting on the grass any time soon. All of these things are a big problem with the questions of depth and game plan. At the same time, younger players are making impressive strides, with the coaching staff emphasizing versatility and player development during training camp in preparation for the grueling season.
Keeanu Benton, a promising defensive lineman, has pointed out Yahya Black’s impressive ability to bat balls at the line of scrimmage as a crucial skill for a defensive player. Benton stressed these talents that frequently never make the stat sheet but are key for blowing up and displacing opposing offenses. “That’s a talent that a lot of people don’t talk about, but it’s important,” he stated.
Like each NFL club, the Steelers must strike a fine line between player health and performance. Coach Mike Tomlin has indicated that there are no specific plans regarding playtime for players suited to practice at this point. “We made no plans about the amount of playtime for those suited at this junction,” Tomlin remarked.
Emerging Talents
Derrick Harmon perhaps has the greatest effect of all on and amongst the players. Ranked as an athlete, he has turned heads throughout training camp and now appears on the first depth chart. His performance is representative of the ongoing growth Tomlin mentioned is key for this team playing deep into the season. “I’m seeing signs of growth and development, but that’s to be expected,” Tomlin said.
Roman Wilson makes an impression Roman Wilson was the most notable receiver, as this is his first real, full camp coming off an injury-riddled 2022. His return adds considerable power to an already deep receiving corps. Burns Pickens, who joined the Steelers’ 2022 opening day 53-man roster last season, now occupies that role. The position battle will be no picnic, either, with established veterans such as Robert Woods competing for a place.
Benton was very high on Black’s potential, specifically praising his size and technique. “He is a big guy. He gets leverage, he gets extension, and he’s able to see the trigger and get those hands up,” Benton explained. This knack for blowing up passing plays can be the difference for a defense trying to create a game changing play.
Offensive Line Development
One way to influence Pickett’s decision is to improve the Steelers’ offensive line. Now, Dan Moore Jr. steps into a pivotal role opposite Jones, who recently returned to action from a lower-body soft-tissue injury. The line’s cohesion will be crucial when they try to keep the pocket clean and reassert a strong ground attack.
Benton acknowledged the importance of teamwork in achieving success in the NFL, stating, “We want to be a versatile group. We got versatile and capable players.” He reiterated the need for diversity in play-calling, especially in all three phases of the game.
Individuals as diverse as Moore and Jones need to make sure they are hunkered down to pass the gauntlet. Building instant chemistry on the field will be important for their success. The Steelers coaching staff understands just how important this level of cooperation is and has adjusted practices to focus on that need.
Quarterback Dynamics
Wide receiver is another position where there’s plenty of competition among young players eager to take advantage of their chance. Brandon Johnson received valuable reps with quarterback Rodgers on Thursday, demonstrating his commitment to securing a spot on the roster. Roc Taylor is still in the thick of the competition for a spot on the roster. His efforts are bringing even more complexity to an already competitive climate.
Fautanu, another player to watch, has been focused on getting his confidence back in his banged up knee this offseason. “Every single day I’m trying to get used to this being my new normal,” he said. His progress reflects the dedication required from all players as they strive for improvement in their performances.
Tomlin mentioned that decisions regarding player roles may be viewed collectively or individually, depending on team needs and individual development goals. “We might view some of those instances on an individual basis,” he said.
