Teddy Bridgewater, NFL quarterback turned youth football coach. Most recently, he talked about his own suspension from coaching at his alma mater Miami Northwestern High School while passing through a Bucs training camp. The suspension came after his solicitation of donations to pay for impermissible benefits such as Uber rides and meals for his players. That hasn’t discouraged Bridgewater from continuing to serve the youth in his community.
Bridgewater’s dedication to the short, young athletes of Miami Northwestern shows selflessness. He spent over $14,000 to conduct a football camp that provided three hot meals daily from local Black-owned restaurants, along with snacks on certain days. He funded things like matching uniforms for players, maintenance on the field, recovery vehicles, and pregame meals.
I used to be those children, I understand what it is to walk in their path, Bridgewater stated. “I know what it’s like to walk those halls at Miami Northwestern and to have your stomach growling and rumbling at 12 o’clock in the afternoon because you didn’t have any lunch money or you don’t get the free lunch. So I can’t change who I am.
The economic reality for the students of Miami Northwestern is sobering, with 75% of them counted as economically disadvantaged. And per the National School Lunch Act, 72% of them qualify for free lunch. Understanding these struggles, Bridgewater told the NFL that he just wanted to keep his players safe from the hazards of their surroundings.
Miami Northwestern is in a tough neighborhood. That’s when the real dangerous stuff can occur, like getting killed by a car while walking home from school. I was only trying to keep them safe,” he told me firmly.
In 2023, the city of Miami Gardens recognized Bridgewater for his contributions and commitment to the youth. To honor him, they renamed a football field home, his legacy clearly visible all around them. This honor acknowledges his enduring influence on the city he had long considered home.
In another related discussion, ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith stepped out on a very long limb. This is why he said Baker Mayfield is the single most important player to watch in the NFL this season. Smith’s remarks suggest a notable spotlight on Mayfield’s performance and potential impact on the league.
Bridgewater remains focused on managing his coaching career and dealing with suspension. He fiercely protects his players throughout this process. “I’m protective, and I’m a father first before anything,” he remarked.
