Maguire, an 18-year-old cricketer from Ireland, has recently undergone a major transformation to her bowling action. Now, she’s finally got the green light to launch her international bowling career! The decision comes after a suspension that began in February. This suspension came after she violated the International Cricket Council’s laws during a one-day international against India in Rajkot on Jan. 10.
After the match, match officials expressed worry over Maguire’s bowling action, resulting in a one-match suspension. On January 21, she passed a bowling test at the ICC-accredited bowling action assessment centre in Loughborough, England. The assessment revealed that her bowling action before exhibiting greater than 15 degrees of elbow extension, the ICC’s tolerance level, exceeded this limit. That was the biggest problem that they knew they had to solve.
After remedial work and a second assessment, the findings verified that Maguire’s bowling action was considered legal. An independent assessment stated that “the amount of elbow extension was within the 15-degree level,” allowing her to return to competitive play.
Maguire made her international debut in 2023 and has since earned 20 caps across formats, taking an impressive 25 wickets. Ireland captain Gaby Lewis has no doubt that Maguire will be back scoring runs. She is confident Maguire will “pick up where she left off.”
“It was a big hit and knock on her confidence, but she has worked so hard and is in a great place now and just needs some games behind her,” Lewis added.
Maguire will not be part of the squad for Ireland’s upcoming three-match T20 series against Pakistan, which begins in Dublin on August 6 at 16:00 BST. She is expected to be reintegrated into the team for matches on August 8 and August 10.
This comes as a huge relief to her and to the administrative staff. They spent seven or eight months just dealing with her behavior and building up her mental toughness. Lewis noted.
