The Hundred 2025 Begins with Exciting Format and Local Rivalries

This thrilling new-format white-ball cricket tournament, which is being created and developed by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), will begin on Tuesday August 5 2025. The tournament will be held in both men’s and women’s competition simultaneously, putting the best of the best on display. This year’s competition has been full of exciting games. With each team equally committed to success in a format that has thrilled fans since day one, the possibilities are endless.

Charlie Dean, London Spirit’s new star spinner, and Sam Billings, captain of Oval Invincibles — winners of the 2023 trophy — won’t be needing to wheel this one around. This win was a glorious finish to last year’s competition. The event will be organized in the same way this year, with the group stages lasting until August 28. Each of the eight participating teams will compete in eight matches during the group phase, striving to secure a place in the playoffs.

In this exciting T20 format, each game is a 100-ball shootout with both teams batting. Whichever team has scored the most points after all these deliveries will be named the winner. The Hundred provides thrilling creative liberty with the ball. Each bowler can bowl a maximum of 20 balls and has the choice of bowling in sets of five or ten balls. This opens the door for more strategic variation in play, keeping fans glued to their seats across the tournament.

In an exciting twist, the competition has added a 25-ball per innings powerplay period that allows batters to accumulate quick runs. This unusual rule encourages balls-to-the-wall batting. Teams desperately race for runs in this important part of the game, creating thrilling drama! The addition of local pairings could create even more thrilling matchups in the tournament. The rivalries are escalating as we go between teams like the Phoenix and Rockets, Spirit and Invincibles, Originals and Superchargers, and Brave and Fire.

As the tournament progresses, the top teams will aim to secure their spots in the eliminator match scheduled for August 30 at The Kia Oval. The second- and third-placed teams are set to clash for a position in the final. That dream final would take place at cricket’s annual home on London’s historic Lord’s cricket ground on Sunday, August 31. The women’s final will kick off at 14:15 BST, followed by the men’s final at 18:00.

The Hundred is still making waves with new innovative concepts, gaining traction and drawing much interest inside and outside the cricketing world. Along the way, it’s cultivated an inviting format and atmosphere that welcomes both long-time supporters and new fans. Because of that, it is arguably the most important event on the cricket calendar. With its focus on entertainment and a fun, skillful spectacle, The Hundred looks set to provide another thrilling season in store this year.
