Chelsea Football Club has announced the signing of teenage defender Jorrel Hato from Ajax, marking a significant addition to their squad. Ajax later announced that the agreement amounted to £38.5 million (€44.18 million). This is made up of a base payment of £35.5m plus various add-ons. Hato’s arrival pushes Chelsea’s summer spending past the £250 million mark. The move underscores the club’s intention to continue developing a youthful, energetic team.
It’s no surprise that at just 16 years and 148 days, Jorrel Hato’s professional debut for Dutch giants Ajax earlier this month garnered a considerable amount of attention. He’s already made waves as one of the best young talents in Dutch football. Most impressive was that he captained Ajax at 17 years old, a testament to his maturity and ability to command the pitch at such a young age. Chelsea will be hoping that Hato will be able to offer solid competition for left-back likes of Marc Cucurella and strengthen their defensive department significantly.
Hato expressed his excitement about joining Chelsea, stating, “I thought a lot about my future and wanted to take the next step in my career. Chelsea is the best place for me to do that so I’m very happy.”
The signing of Jorrel Hato is part of Chelsea’s broader strategy to recruit young developing talent on manageable wages tied to performance incentives. The good news is that this has been a monster summer for the club in terms of acquisition. Their most significant signings being Joao Pedro for £60m, Jamie Gittens £51.1m and Liam Delap £30m. This makes Hato the club’s eighth summer signing, underscoring their aggressive pursuit of youth and recruitment strategy.
Ajax’s management appeared distraught at having lost Hato, whom they considered a promising cornerstone of their future defense. Alex Kroes, Ajax’s director of football, remarked on the player’s departure: “With Jorrel’s departure, we lose one of our key figures in defence. He’s obviously a tremendous talent, tremendous player. On top of that, he’s a fabulous person. We wished him well and hoped to retain him for several years to come. Still, we know that he’s thrilled to get on board for the thrilling ride that Premier League soccer promises to be. We extend our warmest personal desires for success as he takes on this exciting overall opportunity. We are immensely proud of all he achieved for Ajax and wish him all the best in England.”
Hato will join his new teammates this week to get adjusted. At the same time, Chelsea are reportedly locked in a bidding war for further reinforcements to supplement their squad. The Kiwi club are in advanced negotiations to sign RB Leipzig attacker Xavi Simons. That means Chelsea’s summer transfer campaign is very much alive!
