Cameron Young Aims for First Title with Strong Lead at Wyndham Championship

Cameron Young is in the driver’s seat heading into the final round of the Wyndham Championship. He went into the final round with an eye-popping five-shot lead. Having posted a scintillating score of 20-under 190, Young is just one round away from closing his first PGA Tour victory. To do that, he needs to shoot a 67 on Sunday. That score would break the record for highest overall tournament scoring.

Young was thought to be one of the best players not to have won on any major tour. He’s come multiple times close since turning professional. Since his initial season in 2021, he’s gone on to finish as the runner up seven times. Incredibly, he recently placed second in the 2022 British Open at St. Andrews. His long-term aim is to make it on to the Ryder Cup team. He certainly has a unique tie to this event being played at Bethpage Black, where he gained notoriety by winning New York State Open as an amateur in 2017.

Even with a large lead like Young’s, it hasn’t been all smooth sailing on the road to victory. He posted an even par 70 in the third round. This strong performance moved him into a ninth place tie and just inside the last man qualifying for the FedEx Cup playoffs. Despite facing challenges on the back nine, when he missed a few makeable putts that could’ve added to his lead even more,

Young’s week at Sedgefield Country Club was remarkable, too, having played 39 straight holes at one point without a bogey. He did get burned late on, though, when he missed a 6-foot par putt on the 14th hole. The recovery was swift, a spectacular lag putt for a two-putt birdie on the par-5 15th was enough to right the ship. After that, he made a 10-foot birdie putt on the par-3 17th hole, pushing his supremacy to five shots.

In those first few rounds, Young’s sharpness and talent really shone through. He capped off a bogey-free second round with a score of 65, played during a storm delay in the morning. In addition, he showcased remarkable prowess on Saturday by running off four consecutive birdies on the front nine, extending his lead to eight shots before settling into pars for a final score of 5-under 65.

Young’s determination is evident as he stated, “That’s been a goal this whole year.” The pressure, as you can see, is very much in the air, but he is more worried about his performance than the score line.

“I’m just going to worry about what I’m doing. As I said, try to hit the best shots I can and try to hole the putts and we’ll add it up after 18.” – Nico Echavarria

Having grown up in Sleepy Hollow, New York, Young’s ties to golf are strong. His dad was the head professional for years at Jerry’s home course. This community context inspires Young’s passion. He approaches another intense, high-pressure day at Sedgefield with enthusiasm and optimism.

As Young approaches the final round of the Wyndham Championship, anticipation builds around whether he can finally break through and claim his first PGA Tour victory. His incredible poise and composure, especially since his early struggles, have captivated fans and analysts alike during the tournament. We are all looking forward to seeing whether he can make this opportunity equal great success.

“Just played some really nice golf there for about an hour.” – Cameron Young
