Travis Hunter accounted for two touchdowns and tremendous excitement in his recent Jaguars scrimmage debut. He is an offensive and defensive threat, and as his highlight reel shows, he’s a catching maven. During his 38 total snaps, Peters showcased the best of what can happen on both offense and defense. His performance has drawn rave reviews from coaches and fans, a sign that he’s in line for a really strong rookie season.
In the controlled scrimmage, Hunter was on the field for 17 snaps while the offense was first-team and 21 snaps first-team defense against the first-team offense. He logged six receptions with only 65 yards, so he wasn’t creating explosive plays after the catch. This eye-popping performance featured three catches for 43 yards. He notably stood out on one play in particular when he broke across the middle of the field to catch a 21-yard pass. That backbreaking reception sent the Chargers offense into the red zone. Hunter was targeted a second time in the end zone. This underscored his burgeoning status as a valuable contributor in clutch scoring moments.
Liam Coen, the Jaguars’ offensive head coach, said he was pleased with Hunter’s effort. He said that even if Hunter had a larger impact on offense than he did on defense, he might still be a game-changer.
“I thought he was making sharp, fast decisions,” – Liam Coen
While Coen was pleased with the pace, he took responsibility for where his team fell short, highlighting some errors committed throughout the scrimmage. He called out a wobbly pass behind Hunter — which fell incomplete — as a classic example of one of these mistakes, and he noted another as an interception. He remained optimistic about Hunter’s abilities.
“I thought [other than those two throws] he made good, sharp decisions. I thought he ran the show well. I thought it was a good night for him,” – Liam Coen
Hunter’s dual role on the field has gotten players and coaches alike excited to see what he can do. First of all, Coen praised Hunter’s quickness and lean stature, noting that when he received the ball, he could be a potentially dangerous creator.
“Pretty cool [with the ball in his hands] in space, isn’t he?” – Liam Coen
