Here’s a glimpse at rookie wide receiver Luther Burden, who has been one of the most impressive performers through training camp thus far. He’s proving to everyone that he can be the Chicago Bears’ defensive anchor in the coming season. As the second week of camp progressed, Burden’s workload steadily increased, indicating the coaching staff’s growing confidence in his abilities. Even with the many challenges that have come her way, Burden’s willpower and talent have started to shine through.
Burden’s path hasn’t been smooth sailing. Early on, he had a tough time getting lined up on a basic pass rush drill during the first full team practice of training camp. The coaching staff kept a low tolerance for mental mistakes which added all sorts of pressure for him to jackrabbit and learn on the fly. Throughout all this, Burden showed an ability to bounce back and learn from his failures.
During the second week of camp, Burden caught his first pass in team drills on a route from the slot position. This is important because roughly 75% of his routes in the 2023-24 season will be from the slot. That’s a very important variable to focus on! His ability to get open, as evidenced by his one-on-one against Bears’ nickel corner Kyler Gordon, has certainly stood out. Quarterback Caleb Williams put on a prodigious display of arm talent, leading Burden to the catch running in stride. This freed Burden up to make an uncontested catch along the sideline, playing against the second-team offense.
Coach Johnson saw the potential, yet he had to hold Burden accountable for playing at a consistently high level. After one mistake, he replaced Burden with veteran wideout Olamide Zaccheaus, underscoring the competitive nature of the roster and the high expectations placed upon rookies.
Despite all of these challenges, Burden has started to make good on his promise. Earlier this week, he produced a big-time fourth-and-10 reception from quarterback Tyson Bagent. This play stretched the drive out wide and preserved it, securing his place on the team that much more. Burden is at his best when making things happen on the fly. In his two years in Missouri, he built up by far the best player in crunch time.
“I feel like I can do everything in this offense,” Burden stated confidently, highlighting his belief in his ability to contribute significantly.
Burden is making the jump to the pro level in record time. He’s hoping to be Caleb Williams’ favorite target in those clutch situations. His resume experiences have proven that he is more than prepared to take on these duties. Now, he’s looking forward to doing just that as a rookie in Chicago.
Burden’s speed and explosiveness was something that Johnson noticed all the way back during drills in summer camp. His athleticism really pops, and he’s learning the offensive scheme in a hurry. That versatility is what makes him such an invaluable weapon for the Bears.
For one, despite his rookie status, Burden stated that he understands he must come in and prove himself and have his homework done as he fully embraces the excitement of his first training camp.
