Dallas Cowboys’ newly signed guard Rob Jones suffered a fracture in his cervical spine during his first practice on Sunday. This injury puts a tremendous cloud over his future with the team. The incident happened near the end of the player’s session, cutting short what had otherwise been a very positive day for him. According to sources, this injury will keep Jones sidelined for two or three months. This blow will severely lower the experience level of the Cowboys’ first-team offensive line.
Back in March, Jones signed with the Dallas Cowboys. He signed for a smaller one-year contract at $3.75 million, of which $3 million was fully guaranteed. Prior to his Dallas stint, he played four years for the Miami Dolphins. While he was there, he made 30 starts in 49 games played. His insight was supposed to help make the Cowboys one of the nation’s most dynamic offenses this year.
In the wake of the injury, the team continues to prioritize health, recovery and rehabilitation. Coach Brian Schottenheimer expressed optimism about Jones’s early performance with the team, stating, “Rob has been doing some really, really good things.” This kind of positive reinforcement kept shining a light on the innovative impact Jones was starting to have on the team’s chemistry and play before his tragic injury.
In the second Rob Jones stayed on the floor after practice to develop chemistry with fellow rookie Tyler Booker. This collaboration allowed each individual to hone their art and work toward making the greater team shine. Now the injury throws the Cowboys’ offensive line plans for this season and future into uncertainty.
The team is now left to scramble to figure out how to adjust with Jones no longer in the lineup. With potential discussions of a new lineup among the coaching staff going forward, with who is expected to step up in his absence.
Todd Archer reported on the situation, noting the need for adaptability within the squad:
“Tyler’s kind of hitting that mark where he’s a little bit like, ‘Whoa.’ Doing some good things, but doing some things that weren’t to the standard. So what do you do? You make a change. Is it permanent? I don’t know.”
With the new season fast approaching, the Cowboys have a lot to manage with this injury and still be as competitive as they hope to be. The organization has said they’re optimistic for Jones’s long-term recovery and a return to the field someday.
