Brentford forward Yoane Wissa, 28, would welcome a move to Newcastle United. This is his first contract extension, lest he soon miss out on professionally and with his club in the UEFA Champions League, one of the richest sporting competitions. He now wants to be sold, citing that Brentford agreed that he could request a transfer following Ivan Toney’s exit last summer. That guarantee motivates his newfound enthusiasm to seek a replacement now. Brentford’s hierarchy have turned down several bids for Wissa. As he makes his way back to training with the club, plenty of doubt and smoke still surrounds his impending future.
Wissa has one year remaining on his contract at Brentford. The club has an option to extend the deal for one more year at similar financial terms. His dreams of playing at a bigger stage have only grown stronger. Just last week, Brentford turned down a fresh bid from Nottingham Forest. They rejected an earlier offer of around £25 million from Newcastle. Together, these rejections have left Wissa perhaps frustrated but ultimately optimistic.
Wissa’s Determination to Leave Brentford
Wissa though has publicly stated he does not want to report for training and play matches with Brentford anymore. His sudden return from the club’s pre-season training camp in Portugal underlines the urgency of his desire to address the uncertainty over his future.
Keith Andrews, the Brentford head coach, acknowledged Wissa’s situation, stating, “He has gone back to London. It was his decision, obviously because of speculation.” Andrews indicated that Wissa will rejoin the group when training resumes next week, emphasizing that the club expects him back despite the ongoing transfer discussions.
Newcastle’s Interest and Brentford’s Position
Newcastle still want to sign Wissa but are looking at other targets, including him. The club’s management is cognizant of Wissa’s wish to leave this winter and are considering their options in the transfer market.
Whatever happens, Brentford are clearly determined to fight their corner. After being poached of their best players, including Bryan Mbeumo and Christian Norgaard, and head coach Thomas Frank, they definitely cannot afford to sell Wissa. This has produced an extremely difficult political climate, where Wissa feels that the trajectory of his political career is at a crucial crossroads.
The Future for Wissa
With the transfer window still open, clubs are looking more at Wissa’s situation. The player the future of Champions League football on the line at their feet, they must treat it with urgency. Receiving this kind of level of play at this stage in his career is very critical,” he said.
As daunting as that path sounds, Wissa’s hopes are still alive. He hopes to have more clarity about his future in the near term. Both he and Newcastle are clearly still on the prowl for a solution that matches their dogged ambition.
