The Cincinnati Bengals have a made a pretty cool announcement! Defensive end Shemar Stewart signed his four-year rookie contract worth $18.97 million. This week, Stewart was selected 17th overall by the Detroit Lions in the 2024 NFL Draft. Because of his fully guaranteed deal, he’ll get a $10.4 million signing bonus immediately. This agreement follows months of negotiation that featured standoffs over contract language.
Stewart, a first‐round caliber corner from Texas A&M, had his own obstacles to overcome before signing. He didn’t participate in the Bengals’ offseason workouts and sat out the first week of training camp. His absence fueled concern about his preparedness going into the upcoming season. His absence was felt as he lost valuable and necessary time to acclimate with new faces both on the roster and coaching staff.
The situation with Stewart’s contract Negotiations on Stewart’s contract were further complicated by concerns over “void language” in the agreement. For the Bengals, owner Mike Brown was reportedly leery about potential harm that might come over the course of the contract.
“In that case, we would step in and take away the guarantee.” – Mike Brown
Through these challenges, Stewart’s agent, Zac Hiller of LAA, pushed hard to ensure the deal was signed. It was reported that Stewart’s payout structure is more lucrative than those of previous picks at the 17th slot, which could signal the team’s confidence in his abilities on the field.
Stewart’s rookie deal included a smaller training camp roster bonus. This was not the case for his fellow 1st round draft pick Amarius Mims, picked one slot lower at 18th overall. This discrepancy might be indicative of different expectations or priorities from the coaching staff as to each player’s potential role.
Stewart’s deal received final approval on Friday after months of difficult negotiations. Finally, he’ll be able to join his new teammates — only six days after they all reported for training camp. His new-found leadership is sure to strengthen the Bengals defensive line as they get ready for the 2023 NFL season.
“I don’t want to pay somebody who hypothetically could be in jail for four years at this level of pay.” – Mike Brown
As Stewart moves into his new position with Cincinnati, he’ll hope to establish himself as an important contributor. The franchise is still hopeful, though, about his able-bodiedness helping to aid their defensive turnaround in the future.
