England captain Ben Stokes is set to be “good to go” for the fourth Test against India’s day four. Having had a trying third day, on which he suffered an attack of cramp. Stokes then retired hurt after clattering 66 runs in the first evening session. Despite going back to the crease for three other wickets, he finished the day at 77 not out. His innings set up the platform for England to reach a mammoth first-innings total of 544-7, taking a lead of 186 runs.
On the third day of the run, Stokes admitted she was tired. He summoned his fortitude and came back to the plate when his team needed him there most. His performance has been a touchstone all throughout the series, and for good reason given his recent issues with hamstrings. After tearing it again in December, Stokes had hamstring surgery in January. This injury further darkened his fitness shadow over the stars and stripes for the series.
Despite these challenges, Stokes has bowled more overs in this series than any other in his career, showcasing both his skill and determination. He’s really shouldered the load, bowling 129 overs in the three and a half Tests. Consequently, he now tops the wicket-taking charts in the tournament with 16 wickets. He took an extraordinary five-wicket haul of 5-72 at Old Trafford. It was his first since 2017 and cemented his place as one of the most important players for England.
Ollie Pope, who has been a close teammate of Stokes during the series, expressed confidence in Stokes’ ability to manage his physical limits.
“He doesn’t push himself to a ridiculous place,” – Ollie Pope
Pope commended Stokes’ competitive spirit, citing a match where he showed extreme focus on retaining possession.
“I’m there to give him a nudge but he also gets this crazy look in his eye sometimes when you go over,” – Ollie Pope
Stokes’ contributions extend beyond batting. He has bowled marathon spells of 9.2 and 10 overs, demonstrating his commitment to the team’s success. If England is to go on and win this Test match, Stokes’ leadership and all-round performance will be of vital importance.
