Tyreek Hill, the All-Pro wide receiver for the Miami Dolphins, is working on vulnerability this offseason. He does that to rebuild trust among his teammates. Coming off a tough prior campaign, Hill believes in the value of transparency. He thinks this will allow him to develop more meaningful connections with his future colleagues. Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has showered Hill with praise for his commitment to developing their chemistry. He makes clear just how critical personal transformation is to this work.
The three-time team captain turned out for NASCAR’s Drive for Diversity program. He knows that leadership has a heavy mantle, and he knows he needs to reclaim that title again this year. You just have to continue to cultivate that relationship and continue to build on it all, Tagovailoa said. He added that the captaincy should be decided by his teammates, not him.
It was a tough year for the Dolphins and Hill, like the rest of his teammates, was no different. He caught 81 passes this year for 959 yards and six touchdowns. Yet this performance marks a step backwards from his last two seasons, where he regularly surpassed 1,700 YPC. Hill faced backlash for his decision to take a seat during Miami’s regular season finale against the New York Jets. His action raised alarm bells about his level of engagement with the squad.
In a moment of reflection, Hill expressed a desire to play elsewhere, comments he later apologized for and retracted. In response to Hill’s comments from earlier this summer, Tagovailoa remarked, “Football fans everywhere have witnessed that.” He was particularly talking to all the fans out there that ride with those Miami Dolphins out there and ride with Tyreek.
>This offseason, Hill has fully dedicated himself to getting his life together on and off the field. He feels like his newfound vulnerability will win him new favor with his teammates and strengthen his co-leadership. “I think there’s a lot more vulnerability with Tyreek. He’s conversating a lot more with the guys, not just about football but about things off the field,” Tagovailoa explained.
Hill’s maturation has been obvious, because not only is he maturing off the field, he’s working hard to get better on the field. Plus, I can slow down a bit and really focus on my training – it’s exciting!” Hill added. I’m grinding for me, my city, and my squad, but I think it’s going to pay off in the end. His drive for personal betterment is a testament to his commitment to the team. Like any of us, he wants to get back in the good graces of fellow mayors.
As the Dolphins move toward the regular season, Hill and Tagovailoa both stress that establishing trust is essential. He’s doing this all with an eye toward improving himself. Tagovailoa commended Hill for putting in the work to improve his game and be a larger focal point of their team’s offense.
