Kyle Filipowski, the highly regarded rookie wing for the Utah Jazz, sent shockwaves around the NBA on July 22, 2025. In the process, he made himself the first player in the franchise’s history to take home the Most Valuable Player (MVP) honors in the NBA Summer League. The 6-foot-11 former ace from Duke probably played the best baseball of anyone in the tournament. In his closing encore, he averaged an astounding 29.3 points per game in three games.
Filipowski was dominant in the Summer League. While this is very impressive, just consider the fact that during his rookie season he played in 72 games and started 27. During that year, he averaged 9.6 PPG, 6.1 RPG and 1.9 APG over 21.2 MPG. He definitely steps up his game in the Summer League. This is a testament to his work ethic and drive to evolve and handle the physicality of the highest level of basketball.
In three Summer League appearances, Filipowski quickly proved to be the go-to scorer. He proved a high-level offensive versatility, posting a field goal percentage of 56.1% overall and hitting 39.1% of his triples. His standout performance came against the San Antonio Spurs on July 14th, where he scored 35 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, solidifying his status as a top player in the league.
Filipowski’s achievements in the Summer League arrive on the heels of a successful rookie campaign where he was one of only two NBA rookies to accumulate over 650 points, 400 rebounds, and 100 assists by season’s end. In every sense, this accomplishment shines a light on his tremendous potential. He clearly is prepared to step into a larger role during his second campaign with the Jazz.
As he looks ahead to the upcoming NBA season, Filipowski hopes to harness his Summer League experience as a foundation for his development. He stated, “Obviously it’s different in summer league versus (the regular season). I’m just trying to be myself out there right now. That translates to the season, that’s how it’s going to be. I’m going to make the most of it in that way.”
The Associated Press reported on Filipowski’s outstanding performance, highlighting his aspirations and commitment to contribute meaningfully to the Jazz’s success moving forward.
