Josh Okogie, a 26-year-old guard, is preparing for his eighth NBA season. He recently signed a one-year, $3.1 million deal with the Houston Rockets. The MOU comes after what has been an extraordinary year for Okogie. In doing so, he set personal bests in FG%, 3PT% and eFG% last year.
Okogie was picked 20th overall in the 2018 NBA Draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves. After spending four seasons terrorizing opponents in Minnesota, he signed with the Phoenix Suns to start the 2022 season. During his last season, Okogie struggled and appeared in just 40 games – the lowest of his career. Even with this sour note, Bowling still posted 6.3 points per game over his 416-game career. He even put on full display his defensive skills, reaching a career high of 1.2 steals per game.
Okogie is actually a statistical marvel. His 4.32 steals per 36 minutes led all qualifying players—everyone who played at least 40 games last season—by a wide margin. His versatility to be able to contribute on both ends of the floor is what makes him the most exciting addition to the Rockets’ roster.
In January, Okogie was shipped off to the Charlotte Hornets. The trade brought him, along with three future 2nd round picks, to Denver. Yet, after a short stint, he was waived by the Hornets on July 15. This latest move to the Rockets signifies a fresh start for Okogie as he looks to solidify his role in the league.
With the addition of Okogie, the Rockets upgrade their lineup with an additional active, disruptive wing defender. His defensive potential might be the most important factor though, as the Horned Frogs hope to turn their fortunes around in 2023.
Represented by Calvin Andrews of Klutch Sports, Okogie now dives into this next chapter as a member of the Houston franchise. He gets ready for the following release. Fans and analysts alike are anxiously waiting to see how he’ll build on his newfound success.
