Venus Williams just made a powerful pitch for her sister, Serena Williams, to come back from retirement. She’s excited to race against her again with her on the same side! This heartwarming sentiment comes as both sisters recently trained together, demonstrating their lasting sisterhood and shared love for the sport. Serena has 23 total Grand Slam singles titles — an amazing feat. She last played at the 2022 US Open. At the same time, Venus is preparing for her much-anticipated return to the WTA Tour after spending a year away.
Her career has been nothing short of phenomenal. She’s a 23-time singles champion and has won 14 Grand Slam doubles titles with her sister, Venus. On top of that, she has two mixed doubles titles to her credit. The sisters have since emerged as a balance-of-power-shifting double act on the court, running roughshod over opponents in singles and doubles matchups.
Venus, a seven-time Grand Slam singles champion, is battling her way back to competitive tennis form. She is set to compete in her first WTA match since 2022 at this month’s DC Open. Her last tournament was the Miami Open in March 2024. Unfortunately, she lost in the first round to Diana Shnaider from Russia. In doing so, the 45-year-old athlete scored her final victory on tour in 2023. She defeated Veronika Kudermetova in the first round of the Cincinnati Open.
At a recent training session, the sisters, now mid-30s respectively, showed that age has only added to their finesse and athleticism. By then, Serena had already posted her first video to social media, showing off her amazing new groundstrokes. At the same time, Venus appeared nimble and spry, hinting at her former playing days in the early aughts. The sisters even trained together, a unique display of cooperation in their competitive post-career.
I keep saying to my team: ‘The only thing that would make this better is if she was here,’ like we always did everything together, so of course I miss her, Venus joked, thinking about the connection they have with each other on and off the court.
She highlighted the critical role of family and support systems in overcoming the highs and lows of professional athletics. “You know, I believe in love and those around me, so my family, my friends… they’re there for you when the things are lowest and when they’re highest,” she stated.
As Venus gets ready for her return, she doesn’t shy away from the very special talent that Serena is. “You can’t teach that kind of talent. She’s just so good. I don’t know what she’s going to do. I think we always hit the ball because that’s who we are,” she added.
