McDermott Re-signs with Kings for One-Year Extension

Doug McDermott has signed a one-year contract to rejoin the Sacramento Kings. This is his second year at the helm. McDermott’s signing last season with the Kings started on a one-year deal. What he did on the court, while deepening the bench for those that would follow, is immeasurable. This extension is a sign of their confidence in his abilities as he and the Kings organization hope to continue building off their successes the past few seasons.

Last year, his first season with Sacramento, McDermott really let his shooting skills shine. That’s not to mention the fact that he averaged just under 44% from deep across 42 games. His ability to score from deep opened up a whole new offensive option for the Kings and was consistently lethal. That rang true for them during the most pivotal moments of the season.

McDermott now enters his 12th NBA season, most recently coming over from the San Antonio Spurs, providing an intense experience to the Kings. During his career, he has suited up with seven other teams. He shines in his capacity for clever and smart tactical repositioning to fit different styles of play and systems. His unique versatility and skill set have made it possible for him to keep up a career three-point shooting percentage of 41.1%. This figure illustrates just how efficient of a shooter he is and how much value he can provide to any team’s offensive scheme.

Unbelievably, McDermott is not just a high shooting percentage guy taking a few threes cherry-picking, he’s averaging well over three makes a game. Furthermore, his ability—and willingness—to shoot from the logo makes the floor so much more open for his teammates. At the same time, it stretches and puts pressure on opposing defenses.

With McDermott heading into his second season with Sacramento, he’ll be looking to prove he’s more than just a one-year rental. The Kings are looking to improve upon last season’s success in 2023-24. While you could make the case that adding a player with McDermott’s abilities isn’t critically important to accomplishing their objectives, you’d be wrong.
