Leah Williamson Returns to Training, Boosting England’s Hopes for Euro 2025 Semi-Final

Leah Williamson, the captain of England’s women’s football team, the Lionesses, returned to training on Monday morning, raising optimism about her fitness ahead of the highly anticipated semi-final against Italy. Following a troubling ankle injury sustained during the quarter-final match against Sweden, Williamson’s involvement in practice signals a potential comeback for the crucial match scheduled for Tuesday in Geneva.

Williamson suffered the serious injury while tackling against Sweden. She hobbled off the pitch just before the end of the third period of additional time after spraining her ankle during a dramatic penalty shootout success on Thursday night. Her absence, alongside captain Leah Williamson, represents a major, if not catastrophic, challenge to England’s backline. Unfortunately for the U.S., she was one of the best, most reliable defenders in the tournament. Sarina Wiegman, head coach of the Lionesses, confirmed Williamson’s injury, but was hopeful of Williamson’s recovery.

In the first England training session open to the media, all 23 players, including Williamson, trained fully and competitively with their teammates. This group project is a testament to the teamwork and togetherness of the crew going into their semi-final match-up. Esme Morgan, a fellow team member, expressed optimism that Williamson would be fit enough to play in the upcoming match, emphasizing the captain’s importance to the squad.

Niamh Charles ably filled the void when Williamson was injured against Sweden. She was brilliant in those final 15 minutes of extra time. If Williamson cannot go, Wiegman will have to look elsewhere for a defensive replacement. This should mean looking at players such as Maya Le Tissier and Esme Morgan.

Leadership and experience like Williamson’s are invaluable commodities to the Lionesses as they head into their semi-final in search of a place in this tournament’s final. She made a very important desperation tackle on Stina Blackstenius. This unbelievable play came just minutes after Sweden had gone ahead, showcasing her defensive prowess and commitment to Team USA.
