On his second appearance at The Open Championship, staged at Royal Portrush, 38-year-old John Parry stole the headlines. Parry sized up his 192-yard par-3 No. 13 hole with a clean tee shot. The crowd went wild with joy as this particular shot was his first-ever career three-pointer, something truly special.
The incredible scene played out went Parry’s tee shot settled up on the front of the green. It required a few ricochets before the sphere jumped straight into the hole. What a great moment, his first career hole-in-one at The Open! This incredible accomplishment not only demonstrated Parry’s tremendous craftsmanship as an artist, but injected asynchronous competition, drama and chaos to the venerable global tournament.
Parry played in The Open last summer at St. Andrews. He’s been able to share that experience with his fellow competitor, playing partner and friend Justin Leonard. Leonard, winner of the 1997 Open and the pride and joy of Dallas golf, congratulated Parry immediately after his accomplishment. The enthusiastic friendship between the two players contributed to a charged sense of celebration that enveloped the course.
The mood at Royal Portrush was nothing short of miraculous as golf fans watched and re-lived this iconic play. From Long Drive to Augusta Parry’s hole-in-one was a serious reminder of his ability. It served to remind one and all just how wonderfully unpredictable and exciting golf can be. With this record-setting achievement, Parry has made his mark on the international golfing landscape for good.
