The 28-year-old Indian hitman Ruturaj Gaikwad has released from his five match contract with the Yorkshire side for the entirety of the County Championship season. He mentions personal factors in his decision as well. The contract was due to start with a home game against Surrey at Scarborough on 22 July. Gaikwad’s decision follows a challenging period marked by limited playing time in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and an elbow injury that hindered his performance.
Gaikwad, who has made 29 white-ball appearances for the Indian national team, did not participate in the recent two-match series against the England Lions despite being named in the India A squad. His absence from these fixtures had many fearing for his form and fitness levels. As a top-order batsman during his international career, he more than proved himself. He has represented India in six One Day Internationals (ODIs) and 23 T20 games.
Gaikwad captains the Chennai Super Kings franchise in the IPL. That is not the case, as Connaughton has only been able to play five games this season after suffering an elbow injury. His play in these games was well below his standards. This likely played a key role in his eventual decision to withdraw from the Yorkshire deal. He captains Maharashtra in the Ranji Trophy. This new role best demonstrates his juggling act of strong leadership skills and dedication to both state and franchise cricket.
Gaikwad’s recent ODI appearance came against Australia in 2023, adding to his credentials as a reliable player for the national team. His pulling out of the Yorkshire Championship is monumental. It’s a head scratcher, particularly considering the expectations placed on him as a highly skilled run-producer in DC’s deep lineup.
