Premier League Coverage Expands as Clubs Strategize for the Future

Sky Sports has certainly gone all-in on its Premier League coverage. Starting with the 2025-26 season, they will be the sole broadcasters, showing a minimum of 215 live games. That would be a big increase from the 128 matches currently broadcast. What is disappointing, though, is that Sky Sports will continue to show 80 percent of all Premier League games televised next season. This formidable footprint leaves no doubt in consumers’ minds that the network is the definitive destination for football fans across the UK.

Our exciting new season is now only a few weeks away! Newcastle United and Liverpool FC, among many others, now face key decisions on their playing rosters. Both teams are navigating a competitive transfer market while strategizing their performances for the upcoming campaign.

Strategic Moves in the Transfer Market

Newcastle United finds itself at a crossroads, needing to engage in thorough strategic thinking as it seeks to bolster its squad. The Magpies suffered blows in their pursuit of important reinforcements. They are missing on blue-chip prospects like Liam Delap and Joao Pedro, who both went to Chelsea.

To combat these issues, Newcastle have shifted their focus away from their first target towards Brentford forward Yoane Wissa. The club’s main priority this summer is improving their options in an attack. They are especially looking for strikers who are able to hit the ground running. They’re especially interested though in bringing in one of two young forwards who look to be future stars, namely Alexander Isak or Hugo Ekitike. The two players share uncanny parallels in their games.

Yet at the same time, Liverpool have been quietly going about their own business in the transfer market. Well, according to reports, they’re very much interested in signing Ekitike, who himself recently made it known that he would love to complete a transfer to Anfield. The club is under increasing pressure to land a new center forward. This has been the exact sentiment expressed by ex-player and pundit Jamie Carragher earlier this summer. Carragher’s comments were a clear indicator of how vital it has become for the club to revamp their list attacking corps.

Financial Considerations and Compliance

Financially, Liverpool seem very healthy as the club shared record revenue of £613.8 million for the 2023-24 season. This monetary boost means Liverpool can go after their transfer targets without hesitation or fear. Yet they are confronted with a narrow tightrope to walk. The club could still lose another £158 million and be in violation of financial regulations by next summer.

Newcastle do have some leeway, though they will still need to offer well beyond a club-record bid of £70 million to secure Ekitike from Frankfurt. It won’t be an easy deal to close. As both clubs compete for talent in an ever-tighter market, this reality makes negotiations difficult.

Liverpool have reportedly been monitoring the progress of Victor Osimhen. He has quickly become their most attractive option for a third, Ekitike included, as counter-intuitive as that sounds. Another target on their radar is Benjamin Sesko, proving further Liverpool’s intent to strengthen and improve their attack.

The Future of Premier League Broadcasting

Sky Sports is gearing up to the start of the Premier League’s return. This new implementation will completely shift the way fans interact with football in future seasons. Under the new agreement, the majority of games will be broadcast only on Sky Sports. Subscribers can expect an enhanced viewing experience, including additional analysis and more than 800 matches available on the platform during the season.

Even more exciting, this expansion speaks directly to the increasing desire for high-quality commercial-free football content from passionate fans. With uncertainty about funding and policy in the air, both Newcastle and Liverpool are preparing for the battle. The significance of this broadcasting deal cannot be overstated. Clubs will need to optimize their performance on the pitch and enhance their appeal in terms of viewership and fan engagement off it.
