Liverpool have joined the queue for Hugo Ekitike. With Liverpool linked, Eintracht Frankfurt’s 23-year-old strike prospect is hot property. This news follows on from the news that Newcastle United had been told by their main target – Alexander Isak – was not available. Ekitike has undeniably attracted the hype of a number of teams this summer. At a valuation of just £85 million, he can be the shrewdest move in defining the best players in the transfer market.
Ekitike’s profile as a shot-heavy forward cuts a similar figure to Isak. Both players have shown a high-level ability to generate opportunities to score and set up teammates. Ekitike’s attacking rate in the Bundesliga last season eclipsed Isak’s in the Premier League. Beyond this phenomenal display of finishing ability, Ekitike’s stock has risen, likely making him a highly sought asset for any club aiming to boost their attacking options.
Ekitike’s Journey to Frankfurt
Hugo Ekitike began his professional career at Reims in France. In his debut Ligue 1 season, it was a struggle to score goals. His fortunes took a turn when 2022 came around and he was signed by PSG. After one season with PSG, he made the move to Eintracht Frankfurt for £14 million last summer. His tenure at Frankfurt was the most influential. To gain some more experience, he joined Vejle Bold Klubs in Denmark on loan for the second half of the last season.
Oscar Garcia, Ekitike’s first coach this season at Reims, spoke of his potential from an early point in the 2021–22 campaign. “He always was a talented player but some coaches did not like him because of his profile and sometimes because of his character,” Garcia stated. After an early career blip, Ekitike looks to be on the rise. Now, he is among the most attractive options on the market at striker.
Competition for Ekitike
Given Ekitike’s break out every top club in Europe has been drawn to his talents including the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea & Manchester United. He’s got a real touch for making chances and finishing. This skill combined with his versatility make him a coveted target for teams looking to improve their roster depth. Alongside Victor Osimhen and Benjamin Sesko, he stands out as one of the most sought-after forwards of the summer transfer window.
As a reminder, Newcastle were reported to be very keen on Ekitike when he was still at Reims. They were keen to have him signed and sealed but were done over when he decided to make the move to PSG instead. Now, as Newcastle approach formal negotiations with Ekitike’s camp in Austria, the race for his signature has hottened up. Eintracht Frankfurt are convinced there are several other clubs willing to pay in excess of £70 million for Osimhen. This concern makes it all the more urgent for teams such as Liverpool and Newcastle to accelerate.
Future Prospects and Expectations
After an impressive season in the Bundesliga, Ekitike has made people hope for a bright future. He has been encouraged by coaches to reach a level comparable to Kylian Mbappe and other elite strikers. “Within months, he wanted to reach the same level as Mbappe,” Garcia remarked about Ekitike’s ambitions. Combined with his relentless drive, that could lead Norm to even bigger successes. Whether or not he continues his development at Frankfurt or a new club is academic.
