On Sunday, Steve Allan did what no other golfer has ever accomplished by winning the Dick’s Sporting Goods Open wire-to-wire. The tournament was held at En-Joie Golf Course in Endicott, New York. The 51-year-old Australian golfer had a surprisingly easy time dominating the Senior PGA Championship. He played well enough to finish at a record-low 18-under 198, ending with a blistering 6-under 66.
Allan’s path to victory started with a first-round 63, which earned him a two-shot lead on Friday. Whether in the practice sessions or race, he never lost his lead from start to finish. On Saturday, he shot a 69, earning him a one-stroke lead heading into the final round. The golfer showcased his skill and composure by birdying five of the next six holes on Sunday, ultimately parring the last five to secure his win by four strokes.
This victory brought Allan’s tally to two wins for the nascent PGA Tour Champions season. He had already won The Galleri Classic in late March, played at Mission Hills in Rancho Mirage, California. His consistent performance throughout the tournament solidified his position as a formidable competitor on the tour.
Allan reflected on the challenges he faced during the final round, stating, “It was tough. It was tough, even yesterday, hanging in there, and today early on it was a bit rough with the driver. In the rough a lot and just managed to hang in there. Then on the back nine, made a few putts.” More than raw talent, his ability to rise above obstacles without ever taking his eye off the prize was key to making him a winner.
A huge win for Allan – congrats! He has a long track record of playing magical courses like The Open Championship Royal Portrush and the Senior Open Championship Royal Porthcawl. His past work is evidence of his tremendous talent. They point to his calm under fire, as he constantly performs well in the face of established veterans.
