Liverpool Honors Diogo Jota by Retiring Number 20 Shirt

Liverpool FC confirm they will retire their number 20 shirt in memory of their late supporter. This decision pays tribute to Diogo Jota, who was killed in a car accident with his brother, Andre Silva, July 3 in Spain. This unprecedented decision marks a significant moment in the club’s 133-year history, as it is the first time Liverpool has retired a player’s number.

Diogo Jota joined Liverpool in 2020 and wore the number 20 shirt with honor and distinction during his time at the club. After discussions with Jota’s wife, Rute, and other members of the family, the club made the decision to retire the shirt. They took the time to prepare the family for this weighty decision.

According to CEO Billy Hogan, LFC will retire the number 20 shirt for all levels of the club. This covers the men’s first team, women’s team and each of the academy squads. This holistic approach is emblematic of the incredible respect the club has for Jota’s impact on and off the field.

Liverpool is having a special tribute ahead of their match against Preston on Sunday. A special version of “You’ll Never Walk Alone” will be sung before the 3 p.m. kick-off. In a sign of support, as the match is played, Preston will join their visitors by placing a wreath of poppies on their behalf.

Michael Edwards, a key figure at Liverpool, stated, “By retiring this squad number, we are making it eternal – and therefore never to be forgotten.” He emphasized that the decision was made with consideration for the sentiments of supporters and that “as far as Liverpool Football Club is concerned, he will be forever our number 20.”

Liverpool’s decision to honor Jota and his brother through this retirement further underscores the club’s commitment to maintaining a strong connection with its players and their families. More than just a tribute, this simple gesture powerfully reminds us of the impact Jota had on the team. It connects fans with each other, forming a tight-knit community bound by legacy and memory.
