Jason Roy has completed a last-minute move to join Southern Brave ahead of the new season of The Hundred. The 2019 World Cup-winning cricketer has been brought in as the team prepares for the tournament, which begins shortly after the wildcard draft scheduled for Tuesday at 09:00 BST. Prior to Roy’s signing, this was a major issue given Roy’s past struggles. It gives cover for South African batter Faf du Plessis, who is out injured.
Roy’s last appearance on the international stage came in 2023. Earlier this year, he suffered a heartbreaking blow when England’s national team didn’t select him for their World Cup roster. After a difficult season with the Oval Invincibles, Roy fell out of form. He averaged just 17.11 across ten games and was later dropped from the squad entirely. He has since been trying to power his career back in the more fast-paced version of cricket.
In 2023, Roy played for Surrey in the T20 Blast, where he managed to score a highest of 92 runs. His standout form may have attracted attention to his talent, but his 30.10 average from ten matches wasn’t the best reflection of his potential. Ultimately, the Invincibles chose to waive him. The Southern Brave hope that Roy’s experience and skills will provide the necessary boost as they prepare for their campaign in The Hundred.
The new wildcard draft is an invaluable chance for teams to strengthen their squads before the tournament. Trent Rockets hold the first pick in the men’s wildcard draft, and with teams looking to enhance their squads, Roy’s inclusion may influence other teams’ strategies during the selection process.
